March 16, 2005 — Saturn's reflective, icy moon Enceladus has an atmosphere, possibly provided by volcanoes, geysers or gases that are escaping from the orb's surface or interior, according to NASA.

"These new results from Cassini may be the first evidence of gases originating either from the surface or possibly from the interior of Enceladus," said Michele Dougherty, principal investigator for the Cassini magnetometer and professor at Imperial College in London, in a NASA press release.

As if nature really needed to endow vampire bats with anything more unusual than the ability to fly and a propensity to drink blood, the creatures have been found to sprint along the ground, too.

All the better to sneak up on a victim, scientists say.

A new study found fleet-footed vampire bats can break into a loping run on all fours, at least when coaxed on a treadmill.

The X chromosome can protect - or harm - your health, depending on what sex you are

Females are genetically more varied than males, an analysis of the X chromosome has revealed.

A large team of scientists has published a detailed profile of the DNA bundle in Nature magazine.

They found that female mammals, who possess two copies of the X chromosome, express more genes than males, who only have one X and a Y chromosome.

They also said that females were protected from many diseases because of their double dose of the X chromosome.

BLACK HOLE IN BIG APPLE

Don't panic but a black hole is far nearer than you may think.

Unitil now it would have taken a very long trip into outer space to see one but now scientists have created their very own black hole in a laboratory in New York.

But thankfully it was not the sort that could consume the Earth

It lasted for a tiny amount of time, a staggering 10 million billion billionths of a second.

The heat generated was 300 million times the temperature on the surface of the Sun.

Scientists used a particle accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, to shoot two beams of gold nuclei at each other at the speed of light.

The intense heat of the collision breaks down the nuclei into quarks and gluons, the most basic building blocks of all normal matter.

These particles then formed a ball of plasma which can be detected because it absorbs jets of particles produced by the collision, so creating a black hole.

Ed Shuryak, a physicist at Stony Brook University in New York said: "It's very useful in that it will inspire thinking in that direction.

"But it's going to be another thng to see if it produces any fruit."

Poruke mogu otprilike otputovati dvije svjetlosne godine, a najbliža zvijezda je udaljena četiri svjetlosne godine. Za sada se u svemir mogu slati samo telefonski pozivi, ali tvrdtka najavljuje proširenje svojih usluga na e-mail-ove, video i digitalne fotografije.

Proteza za mozak

Uskoro će početi testiranje prve proteze za mozak, tačnije čipa koji bi mogao da nadoknadi oštećenja hipokampusa, dela mozga koji služi za prikupljanje novih iskustava. Naučnici sa Univerziteta u južnoj Kaliforniji izabrali su najbolje istraženi deo mozga za isprobavanje tehnologije koja bi mogla da nadomesti oštećenja nastala usled moždanog udara, epilepsije ili drugih bolesti. Tokom desetogodišnjih istraživanja ispitivano je kako hipokampus reaguje na različite električne nadražaje i došlo se do matematičkog modela koji opisuje rad ovog dela mozga. Na osnovu ovog modela napravljen je čip koji bi bio spojen sa hipokampusom pomoću dve elektrode, jedne koja prima električne impulse iz mozga i druge koja šalje impulse natrag.

U narednim mesecima čip će prvo biti testiran na konzerviranom mozgu pacova, zatim na mozgu živog pacova, a na kraju kod majmuna čiji hipokampus ne funkcioniše. Ako testovi daju zadovoljavajuće rezultate, najavljuju naučnici, mogla bi da počne primena prve proteze za mozak kod ljudi. Pre toga, upozoravaju pojedini naučnici, treba sagledati i etičku dimenziju primene ovakve tehnologije. Pošto je pomenuti deo mozga odgovoran za sakupljanje novih iskustava, teoretski je moguće kontrolisati pamćenje pomoću čipa. Takođe, savršeno pamćenje koje bi moglo da se postigne na ovaj način, a koje na prvi pogled izgleda primamljivo, za ljude jednostavno nije zdravo; zaborav je koristan, naročito kada su u pitanju bolna i traumatična sećanja.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Even if people stopped pumping out carbon dioxide and other pollutants tomorrow, global warming would still get worse, two teams of researchers reported on Thursday.

Sea levels will rise more than they have already risen, worsening the damage caused by extreme high tides and storm surges, and droughts, heat waves and storms will become more severe, the climate experts predicted.

That makes immediate action to slow global warming even more vital, the teams at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado report in the journal Science.

"Even if we stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations, the climate will continue to warm, and there will be proportionately even more sea level rise," said the NCAR's Gerald Meehl, who led one of the two studies.

Farm animals have feelings which should be respected and catered for, academics at a London, UK, meeting have said.

They believe animals should not be dismissed as simple automatons - cows take pleasure in solving problems and sheep can form deep friendships.

Delegates from around the globe were speaking at the Compassion in World Farming Trust (CIWF Trust) conference.

They shared ways of exploring the minds of animals, as well as monitoring their suffering and alleviating their pain.

The all-party science and technology committee report will re-ignite the debate about designer babies and human cloning laws.

It will say parents having fertility treatment should have the right to decide the sex of the embryo to be implanted.

"There is very little evidence that allowing parents to choose the sex of their child would have any imbalancing effect on society," a committee member told the Daily Telegraph.

What do you get when you turn the temperature up to a trillion degrees?

Quite a heating bill.

Actually physicists claim that at this temperature nuclear material melts into an exotic form of matter called a quark-gluon plasma - thought to have been the state of the universe a microsecond after the Big Bang.

Recreating this primordial soup is the primary purpose of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (news - web sites). After five years of data, it appears as if RHIC may have succeeded.
